Richard Petty’s 200 mph Superbird goes for its first ride in 40 years

For 40 years the chariot of “The King” has sat still, until the Goodwood Road & Racing channel took a trip to the Richard Petty museum.

Richard Petty’s 200mph Plymouth Superbird changed the world of motorsport in the 1970s. This highly modified but sadly short lived version of the Road Runner was Plymouth’s answer to the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona.

It has often been speculated that the car was designed specifically to lure Petty back into Plymouth’s open arms.

The video below takes us on a trip through Petty’s museum before discussing the history of the iconic Superbird. Jump ahead to the 7:17 minute mark to see the classic race car hit the road.
